Building the Dream Team: How to Recruit the Best Yearbook Staff

POSTERS-768x768

Recruiting the perfect yearbook staff can feel like casting the school musical. One approach is to require students to apply, even if your program accepts all applicants.

A Yearbook Staff Application helps convey the commitment expected, giving potential staffers a glimpse of the responsibilities they’ll take on. Often, completing an application process screens out students who may not be fully prepared for the demands of the role. If they’re unwilling to answer basic questions about themselves, it may signal they’re not ready for the accountability needed in journalism.

Setting Expectations Early

In addition to an application, consider using a Yearbook Staff Contract that outlines specific staff requirements and key dates. This contract can set expectations for commitments like attending school events for photos, advertising yearbook sales, handling equipment, and participating in any summer camps. Including a parent signature field ensures that families are aware of the level of commitment, which can prevent issues later.

Inclusive and Diverse Recruitment

A diverse staff that reflects your school community is ideal. Look for students from different backgrounds, clubs, and sports teams—not only those in honors classes. Each brings unique insights and connections, enriching the yearbook’s representation of school life.

Engage with Social Media and Peer Recommendations

Recruitment doesn’t end with applications.  Sharing videos and social posts can draw in students who are eager to create lasting memories and develop skills like time management, creativity, and collaboration.

If possible, use resources like a "Top 10 Reasons to Join Yearbook" video, applications, flyers, and posters from Balfour’s Yearbook Curriculum, available on StudioBalfour under the Education and Build A Book tabs.

Encourage current yearbook members to reach out to students they think would thrive on the team. English and art teachers can also recommend students who might have the skills and passion needed for the role. Seek out those students and invite them personally.

Crowdsourcing Contributions from the School Community

Consider crowdsourcing photos, quotes, and stories from the broader school community. Using Balfour’s proprietary tools, like ImageShare allows students, parents, and staff to easily submit content remotely. This approach expands your reach and brings in diverse perspectives to represent the school year.

Additional Recruitment Tips

  • Spread the word about open positions on social media. Emphasize the unique chance to document history, meet new people, and enjoy the perks of being on the yearbook team.
  • Include an insert with staff information when distributing yearbooks, reaching a broad audience directly.

With these strategies, your recruitment can inspire students to join the yearbook staff and ensure they’re well-prepared for the journey ahead.
