Four yearbook staffs were named finalists Monday for the 2019 Design of the Year by the National Scholastic Press Association. The judges selected 10 finalists in each of 10 categories, recognizing students on newspaper, newsmagazine, yearbook and literary magazine staffs.
“With an emphasis placed on packaging verbal and visual content in a reader-friendly way, the finalists demonstrate creativity with typography, white space and color,” Gary Lundgren, NSPA associate director and contest coordinator, said. “Design is definitely playing a key role in the evolution of print publications.”
Balfour customers snagged three of the 10 finalist spots in both the Yearbook spread category and Theme category. Five staffers from three schools—Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, Vista Ridge High School and Bowie High School—are finalists for their design in the yearbook spread category. In the theme division, two editors from Vista Ridge, one from Holy Trinity, and the Bridgeland High School staff are nominated. The awards are for the 2019 yearbooks.
The winners will be announced at the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention, at an awards ceremony Nov. 23 in Washington D.C.
