Honor teachers with an environmental portrait assignment

Teacher-Appreciation
Environmental portraits capture a person in their surroundings.

May 4-8 is teacher appreciation week. This is a terrific opportunity to thank and recognize faculty members who are supportive of your journalism program.

Since Teacher Appreciation Week is next week, now is the time to start planning. Whatever you decide to do, put a responsible student in charge so you don’t have another item on your to-do list.

Some staffs deliver candy and write thank you notes, which teachers appreciate. However, consider a project that requires students to use skills they learned from being on the yearbook staff, like the one developed by Adrienne Forgette (Darlington School, Rome, GA). The assignment involves taking environmental portraits of teachers and writing profiles. The portraits are hung up during teacher appreciation week and then presented to each teacher at the end of the week.
