Once it was verboten to publish a title page without pictures. But a pandemic challenged our photo opportunities and made us craftier. Here are eight title pages that packed a punch without packing in the photos.
Abilene High School, Abilene, Texas The oversized numeral clearly visualizes the “All for One” theme. The black background and copy placement adds to the simple, but effective look.
Bellevue East High School, Bellevue, Nebraska The gradient visual from the cover repeats with a slight twist—a splash of white running vertically down the page. The design choice emphasizes the theme logo, letting the brightly covered letters pop on the white.
Bridgeland High School, Cypress, Texas The playfulness of the theme, “Definitely Maybe” shines with the bright colors, script fonts and hand-drawn elements.
Inglemoor High School, Kenmore, Washington The color blocking and use of typography makes this title page stand out. The school details run down the right edge, while the theme “A Normal Year *,” with the oversized asterisk, takes center stage. A quote nicely rounds out the design, providing a personal touch with typographic appeal.
Peterson Middle School, Sunnyvale, California Like their 2020 title page, The Galleon staff eschewed pictures again. The stark white background leaves the focus on the colorful graphics used throughout the book.
Rock Canyon High School, Littleton, Colorado With the navy background, this simple title page delivers. The vital information is broken down into bite-size chunks, smartly paired with spinoff headers connecting to the theme “consider.”
Santa Fe Trail Middle School, Olathe, Kansas Mirroring their bold and dramatic cover, this title page features all-caps typography with a painted grunge look in school colors.
Westfield High School, Westfield, Indiana Warm hues in asymmetrical shapes fill this title page, making us not miss photos at all. The unusual shapes and varied patterns are a smart way to visualize the “The New Normal” theme.
While the pictureless title page was borne out of necessity, 2021 showed it has potential. A lack of images didn’t make these first pages feel lacking. Instead, the creativity produced smart, theme-connected pages that packed a punch.
