The best yearbook is a sold-out yearbook. However, it’s always smart to have a few extras put away. Here’s why.
SOLD OUT. Two favorite words in the yearbook world. But we highly recommend padding your yearbook order with additional books.
Avoid the wrath of mad mommas
Nothing ruins distribution day more than being yelled at by a parent. For one reason or another, potential buyers miss every deadline and never buy a book. Or they think they ordered and never did (it’s amazing how often a parent pulls out a receipt, and it’s from the year before).
Skip the madness and slide a few extra books in your order. When that desperate parent calls, you’ll be the hero.
Mistakes happen
Another dilemma is when personalization goes wrong. Name engraving personalizes a book by adding a line or two of text, usually the person’s name, on the front cover. It’s easy to misread handwriting and/or record the wrong letter, resulting in a misspelled name. In the case of icons (symbols added by the name), we’ve seen rare cases of the wrong icon added. If you have extras, use the personalized book to swap with nearby yearbook staffs, and give the student a new book.

Free to give
Additional books are also a nice commodity if you offer any books gratis. Staffs often donate a free book to their principal, counselors’ office, library and/or school resource officer. Others give one to each assistant principal. Several staffs trade books with other programs in their school district and submit copies for competitions.
Regardless of the reason, it’s nice to have a few additional books. Balfour sends you extras, but that number ranges depending on the printing process. Save yourself distribution headaches and add a few extra books to your order. With final quantity counts due soon, you have a little time to make changes. Discuss with your Balfour representative how many books to order.
