Welcome back to a new school year and a new round of Tuesday Tips. We’re here to give helpful advice and share innovative ideas. Let’s make your 2020 yearbook the best yearbook ever.

With the new school year comes new students, new themes and a new kit. Get started on your 2020 yearbook with the supplies included in your fall production kit.

Fall production kit

Padfolio—A 9” x 12” padded folder with a legal pad provides an easy go-to for taking notes.

Adviser Guide—This is your playbook to anything, everything and all things yearbook. It includes a production schedule, marketing plan, design suggestions and portrait basics. There’s an elaborate ladder to detail assignments, deadlines and photographs. The ladder section also has a master style planner where you can sketch layouts and note font and graphic specifications.

Yearbook Adviser Guide

Both the Yearbook Adviser Guide and the Essential Guidebook feature a Yearbook 101 spread which includes yearbook terminology and the elements of a yearbook spread.

Posters—A color chart provides all the color options and CMYK amounts. A font poster showcases all the options (see your spring planning kit for the more detailed font book). A third poster is two-sided—one side showcases 2019 covers for inspiration and the other side yearbook terminology and essentials for theme pages.

SimplyCreate Cover Collection—This piece showcases Balfour’s line of standard covers and endsheets, along with the thematic design templates and graphics for each of the 16 fully-developed packages.

Ladder Diagram—A vital guide to planning the year, this paper ladder allows you to chart the contents and deadlines of every page in the yearbook. It also shows each signature as a reminder that yearbooks are printed 16 pages at a time. Strive to submit completed signatures whenever possible. Utilize the ladder when planning deadlines, topics and assignments. Pro tip: Laminate your ladder and color code it based on deadlines.

Sample Signature—When unfolded, this example of a signature shows 16 pages on a large, double-sided piece of paper. Each side is called a flat, and each flat consists of eight pages. Each page is numbered to help students understand how they are laid out for the printing process. The sample signature also reminds staffers the importance of completing a sig to continue yearbook production.

Sample Signature

The sample signature shows both flats of the signature, one in color and one in black and white. It’s a helpful reminder to staffers that a sig cannot be printed until all 16 pages in that signature are submitted.
