Selecting a Theme

Tuesday Tip: A theme can tie your book together and give it a cohesive look.

First, think about big ideas that define this year. Themes are built around a word, a phrase, or a concept. What stories do you want to tell this year? Is this going to be a challenging year? If so, maybe a theme like Just Go With It. If there are lots of changes happening, maybe Evolve or Grow. Some administrators select a theme for the school year – consider an adaptation of their theme. Here’s a link to an extensive list of themes on Studio Balfour. https://studio.balfour.com/education/themes/

Second, decide on a tone. Your colors and fonts should match the tone of your theme. If Celebrate is the theme and informal and fun is the tone, choose colors and fonts that reflect that – maybe bright colors and a handwriting font like Felt That. If you are going for fancy and formal, your fonts and colors will be different. Study the font and color posters in your Adviser Kit. There are also links to them under Build A Book in Studio Balfour.

Once you have an idea, look for ways to illustrate this theme with words and pictures. Just Go With It – take photos of the cross-country team running through the hallways on stormy afternoons. If that’s your theme, every time the school has to pivot and do something unusual – get photos and quotes so that you can tell those stories in the yearbook.

If you need help or just want to discuss the theme with someone, call your yearbook representative. We are full of ideas and experience and love to discuss themes with our customers!
