Whether you’ve been in school a few weeks or you’re just starting, it’s time to move into yearbook mode. The beginning of the year offers a chance to get organized, go over basics and make a plan for the book. We have tons of ideas and resources to help you prepare for the year.

1. Welcome your staff. From goody bags to speed dating, getting to know the staff will create bonding moments and a positive atmosphere. Say goodbye to summer and hello to yearbook with these fun activities and icebreakers.

2. Organize the chaos. Gather the documents that will make the year go smoother. Essentials include schedules, student body and sports rosters, club lists and staff directories.

3. Create a mission statement.
Unite the staff with a clear and concise mission statement that serves as a guide for the year.

4. Jedi-master your theme. Find your inner Yoda by developing the yearbook theme. Create visual/verbal connections to support the concept.

5. Create a staff manual. Staff manuals help establish style guidelines, media policies and procedures, staff expectations and photography information. Here's how to create yours

6. Have fun with fonts. Set the tone by choosing a typeface that reflects the theme’s personality. Consider type hierarchy, sizes and weights when making font choices.

7. Plan photography coverage. Prepare for the visual aspect of storytelling with a photo plan. Calendars, camera settings and research will make it a snap. And while you're at it, organize your camera closet.

8. Maximize School Picture Day. Use picture day to your advantage by gathering content, interviews and questionnaires for secondary coverage and the people section. Or build goodwill by helping on picture day and market the book as well.
